Master thesis: Modelling a target rapid transit network for Berlin in an agent-based transport simulation (MATSim)

Problem description:
The number of inhabitants in Berlin is growing and expected to grow more in the future. At the same time politics aims to push forward a change in mobility patterns and shifting demand from private car to bicycle and public transportation. In order to realise significant shift towards public transport the quality and attractiveness of the public transport offer needs to be improved and extended.

The Mobility Institute Berlin (mib) designed a future public transit network which allows to increase capacity, quality and service levels as well as cutting travel times in public transport in Berlin and the surrounding area – in the following referred to as “Target Rapit Transit Network”. The concept involves all modes of public transport including multi modal transportation chains but focuses on the rapid transit network (U-Bahn, S-Bahn, Regional Trains). This innovative concept encompasses extensions of existing lines, new lines as well as innovations that bring both passengers and citizens experiences to a new level.

Master thesis assignment:
For the assignment, our idea is to model one or more scenario(s) of Target Rapit Transit Network against the status quo and analyze shifts from existing lines and from other modes of transportation. As a foundation, the MATSim Open Berlin Scenario model can be used. The definition of the scenario(s) will be part of the Master thesis based on advise and support from mib. Modelling support will be given by VSP.

Requirements:

  • Fundamental knowledge of MATSim (e.g. as taught in the modul „Multi-Agent Transport Simulation“
  • Knowledge of Java
